How Lead Batteries Work

As long as the lead battery is used, it will be vulcanized. But lead-acid batteries in other fields have a longer life than those used in electric bikes, because they have a more vulcanized working environment.

1. Deep discharge

The lead battery used in the car will discharge in one direction only when ignition occurs. After ignition, the power generator will automatically charge the battery without causing deep discharge. And e-bikes, which are impossible to charge while riding, often discharge more than 60 percent of the way deep. When the concentration of lead sulfate increases during deep discharge, the vulcanization will be quite severe.

2. Large current discharge

The 20km cruise current of an electric vehicle is usually 4A, which is higher than the working current of a battery in other fields, while the working current of an overspeed and overloaded electric vehicle is larger. Battery manufacturers have tested the cycle life of 1C charging by 70% and 2C discharging by 60%. After such life test, the battery that can achieve charge and discharge cycle 350 times is very many, but the effect that is used actually is very different. This is because the high-current operation increases the discharge depth by 50%, and the battery will accelerate the vulcanization. So, the battery life of the electric three-wheeled motorcycle is shorter, because the body of the three-wheeled motorcycle is too heavy and the working current is above 6A.

3. High charging and discharging frequency

Batteries used in back-up power supply only discharge when power is out. If you stop electricity 8 times a year, you can achieve a life of 10 years with only 80 times of cycle charging, while it is common for electric cars to charge and discharge more than 300 times a year.

4. Short-term charging

Due to the electric bicycle is traffic tools, there is little time, rechargeable in 8 hours to complete. 36 v or 48 v 20 ampere hour charging, it will have to improve charging voltage (generally for single section 2.7 ~ 2.9 v), when the charging voltage exceeds oxygen evolution of the single battery voltage (2.35 v) or hydrogen evolution voltage (2.42 v), the battery will open valve exhaust due to excessive oxygen, cause water loss, increase the concentration of electrolyte, vulcanization phenomenon aggravate of the battery.

5. Unable to charge in time after discharge

As a means of transportation, the charging and discharging of electric bicycles are completely separated, so it is difficult to be charged in time after discharge. If a large amount of lead sulfate formed after discharge is reduced to lead oxide without charging for more than half an hour, it will be cured into crystals.

6. Master charging time correctly

In the process of use, the charging time should be accurately grasped according to the actual situation. Refer to the usual frequency of use and mileage, also note the battery manufacturer provided by the capacity size. As well as matching charger performance, charging current size and other parameters control charging frequency. Generally, the battery is charged at night, and the average charging time is about 8 hours. In the case of shallow discharge (short driving distance after charging), the battery will soon be full and overcharged, which will lead to water loss, heating and lower battery life. Therefore, the battery is best to charge once when the discharge depth is 60% to 70%, which can be converted into cycling distance when used in practice. Necessary charging should be carried out according to the actual situation to avoid harmful charging.

7. Prevent sun exposure

Electric cars are strictly prohibited from being exposed to the sun. The over-temperature environment will increase the internal pressure of the battery and make the battery pressure limiting valve open automatically. The direct result is to increase the battery's water loss, which will inevitably lead to the decline of battery activity, the softening of the acceleration plate, the heating of the shell during charging and the fatal damage such as the bulge and deformation of the shell.
